Many African folktales stem from animals and people, themes which the original tinga tinga is created from. Edward Saidi Tingatinga, born in the southern part of Tanzania brought this creative art to life in the late 1960s. Tingatinga made this form of art popular and after his death painters held a meeting and decided to coin the unique art Tinga tinga. Over the years the art has evolved reflecting the individually of some artists yet distinguishing elements remain keeping it in the distinctive Tinga tinga fold.
